Service
During my time at Emory University, I have had the opportunity to participate in and lead service projects for the program, department, and university. Details about those are below:
First Year Peer Mentor
Our program does an amazing job of helping students transition into graduate school. However, I saw a need for a more formal role that upper-level graduate students could help fill. After talks with our DGS and other graduate students, I developed the program known as First Year Peer Mentors. Over the last two cohorts of new students, my colleague Pablo Estrada and I have served as mentors; we have planned welcome events and community-building events, participated in and led professional development classes, and acted as liaisons between the administration and the first-year cohort.
Laney EDGE Ambassador
From 2021 to 2023, I served as a Laney Graduate School EDGE Ambassador. EDGE (Emory Diversifying Graduate Education) is a program through the graduate school to increase exposure, admission, enrollment, successful matriculation, and graduation of diverse scholars. As one of the first Economics graduate students in this organization, I helped recruit graduate students by participating in campus recruitment events and contributing to conversations with campus leaders regarding the needs of graduate students. Our department now has four students currently serving as an EDGE ambassador thanks to the connection I helped foster.
Professionalism Workshop - Presentation Skills
Before starting my PhD at Emory, I worked at The Walt Disney Company. One of the biggest learnings from that experience is how to present. My experience in corporate plus presenting my research at conferences has helped me develop tools and skills for handling those awkward or less-than-ideal situations that happen when you present. Combining my experience with advice from two of our newest faculty members, Pedro Sant'Anna and Maggie Jones, I gave this workshop to current economics graduate students. You can find those slides here.
Women in Economics
Graduate Student Mentoring
Starting my second year in the program, female faculty in the department began a mentoring opportunity called Women in Economics. This program is designed to create a community among women in our department, where faculty can offer advice and words of wisdom as a female navigating this field. Beginning in my third year, I took on an active role in planning events. I helped the faculty restructure the mentoring dinner based on learnings from the previous year and also spearheaded the addition of the Dinner with the Deans event. This mentoring initiative is an opportunity for women graduate students to meet with female deans across campus, create connections, learn about their time in administration, and ask questions about their experiences.
Undergraduate Student Mentoring
Faculty that lead the mentoring for graduate student women in economics also have a club for undergraduate women. As part of their program, I was asked to serve on a panel where I shared advice, learnings, and mistakes I made on the path toward my PhD.
Starting in Fall 2024, I also work with this organization as a graduate student representative. I serve as a mentor in the Women in Leadership Economics course.
